Are Unions needed today in America today? I’m not sure What about you? It Had its day in the 1920 ‘s with sweatshops and coal mines but today it’s practically Obsolete’.I was in a Union which Shall remain nameless for the purpose of the post
This particular Union sold us down the drain. We had affiliated with them when we were on strike. Before joining them we had an employees association. It was the dead of winter and we were on strike-in the cold . The boss kept sending out letters to every worker saying “Why stay out in the cold come back and we will negotiate while your working” By the way the boss sent these letter out to their employees every week like clock work.
The union hollered “We will return only when we have a written contract “!!!! ….(there was a 2 or 3 months penalty or waiting time to receive unemployment insurance when you go on strike in most states). Once the strikers get unemployment insurance they have some leverage as they remain striking because some of the financial hardship is taken away … Well the union business agent sent us back to work right before our Unemployment Insurance kicked in . Guess what without contract & the boss got “Sweet Heart Deal” I was beyond outraged that’s when I decided to run and was elected Shop Stewart. My father was working in the Shoe Industry as a skiver for well over 20 years never took a day off, never was late and a very good reliable worker & his boss started to manufacturing his shoes in Europe and eliminating jobs at his shop the union did absolutely nothing for them the American union worker and he was permanently layed off. The stories go on and on , I’m sure we all can relate to them, I sure can.
There are certain jobs that the unions can be greatly beneficial to their members,Police, Fireman, sanitation worker, Truckers, Airlines workers they can “squeeze” by putting everything to a qhalt a total stand still.. so their union is good for them. However from my personal perspective in wasn’t beneficial to me or my father in any way . In closing at one time they all were greatly needed a but today it’s up to you to decide /end
