When I was growing up a Jew in the 1950′s , all year you were an American a part of society all year except from The day after Thanksgiving to New Years Day, you were alienated from society, In school I remember, Christmas songs being tought and sung and I asked when are we going to sing Hanukkah Songs , only to get a wise guy smirk from the teachers. The Christmas decoration were up on every main st .U.S.A. and every T.V. show had a Christmas special or theme not to mention every radio station playing Christmas songs , It was like We Jews were aliens In the country for 1 month a year, Today with the inclusion Hanukkah a in the ‘Holiday Season” makes me feel good that no Jew in America will be alienated once again, Even thou Hanukkah is not the most holiest of holidays it plays a paramount importance to Jews in todays society..end

Don”Moses” Lerman With Rabbi at”Moses” Lerman’s Nieces Bat Mitzvah Ceremony
On Sunday December 6th 2009, at 23 years old I had my Bat Mitzvah!  by   Shana Urban
After I returned from my Birthright Trip in Israel, I was told of an organization called the JEC that had an office in Manhattan right on 14th Street where I can continue to participate in Jewish Events.  I took some Hebrew classes as well as volunteered for food drives for elderly Jewish residents of NY.  Although I enjoyed all the different things I involved myself in with the JEC, my most memorable experience was my Bat Mitzvah.
The classes were held weekly for 2 months, 2 1/2hrs a class about 25 people large and lead by Rabbi Lawrence.  We were provided with the Jewish Bible and learning materials.  Rabbi Lawrence was incredibly funny and a great teacher.  We left our classes with laughs and homework/study.  He wasn’t as interested in lecturing us about religion as he was about our Jewish Heritage which I really appreciated.
Each class involved an hour of Hebrew Reading and then focused on a particular topic: Jewish History, Holidays, Shabbat, understanding good “midot”, even particapating in a faux Jewish Wedding!   We had a couple of off-site classes as well, one was at the Jewish Center on the Upper West Side with Rabbi Hirt where we learned all about the Torah.
On the final ceremony day, My Bat Mitzvah!,, we all gathered with our families and friends at Synagogue that was catered very nicely for the event.  There were over 100 people there, one of the attendants was Michael Steinhardt who is one of the founders and donors of Birthright Israel.  Each one of us prepared a speech about our interpretation about a particular verse from the Jewish Bible, my speech was based off Bha’alotcha (Numbers 8-12).

The experience is one I will never forget and I’m forever grateful to the JEC and Birthright for allowing me this opportunity to have a Bat Mitzvah and learn more about my Jewish heritage.

Should Jewish Newscasters Take Off On The High Holidays?

I often thought  to myself that any Jewish Newscaster should have the decency and pride to take the day off on a High Holiday even if they are not religious. It sends the wrong message to non Jews that Jews have no respect for themselves. and if you have no respect for yourself , why should anyone respect you . T.V stations should automatically give them off the day and have them pull duty on Christmas for example . freeing a Christian from coming to work on his or her Holiday. It just doesn’t sit well with Jewish viewers to see Jewish reporter or anchor on High Holiday , plain and simple…end

Kosher Turkeys Are For The Birds

Plucking a turkey

I just purchased a kosher Turkey for  Rosh   Hashana , not only was it bloody it was full of feathers, Now I know that they slaughter Turkeys younger and that the  bones don’t have time to calcify  so they are  bloody so they tell us , but why should I pay top Dollar for a hairy feathered bird. The kosher meat and poultry industry  is ruining itself with inferior high very high priced product, time to find a new way to Honor God … buy trayph!

Jews must Find A New Way To Honor The Dead.

1

Light Orchid With the high cost of a funeral today and with the acknowledgement that today its strictly a business of non Jewish ownership of questionable ownership that rakes the  bereaved over the coals in their most vulnerable time, its high time that Jews find a new way to honor the deceased.
Perhaps organ donor ship, or an  inexpensive cremation, I find it insulting when I hear that it desecrates the deceased. I find it offensive when Jews in Israel will not use Jews bodies for cadavers for that reason , but will import cadavers from India  , what Bull, whatever happened to do on to others as you want upon yourself? Most funerals are frauds, the funeral home gets  you a Rabbi , who never saw  or knows the family from Adam and meets with them and then spins a story as if he went threw the war and grew up  with the decease what Chutzpah,. its phony and not worth $10-15,oo0 dollars its not worth anything to have  shame  like that perpetuated.
My grandfather who was born in Warsaw Poland in 1893 said that the mourners used to wrap the deceased in a sheet and put one wooden board underneath and on top and that was all that was it when it came to a burial. Honor the dead not the funeral home owners .I’d  personally rather be made into Soilent Greenthan have my family bring me to todays funeral parlors. or bury me in a orange crate, in a month the acid of the soil or the cemetery rats and bugs will eat threw any expensive coffen finish or perhaps some scrupulousness grave digger might dig  up and sell back the coffen to an other funeral parlor, do you think that a $ 15,000 box will stay in that plot of yours ..get real wake up..and by the  way the lease on a grave plot is only 95 years  after that they plant someone new in your spot,sorry..end

Who Owes A Synagogue When It Closes Its Doors For Good?.

.  Traditionally when a group of Jews want to start a Synagogue, they get together, start a building fund , each prospective congregation members puts up x amount of money. either donated, a loan of some sorts , I am presuming that there is paper work somewhere along the line. there is an elected President , they interview and hire a Rabbi , either rent an apartment or buy a house for the Rabbi to reside in, when the loans are satisfied and the congregation moves away. traditionally the president of the Shul is supposed to take the money from the sale and put it toward s the next synagogue that he is involved with that opens up in the future, Is he the legal trustee and l allowed to 1. perform the transaction of the sale of the temples land and or building and if so what obligations does he have by law to follow out any plan at all? This is a major grey area of the law ,after all this is not a Church who owns and oversees the individual houses of Worship it’s strictly congregational. My Grandfather told me such a story that when the members moved away from his Synagogue in Williamsburg Brooklyn and it was closed down Circa1956 he later ( my Grandfather) ran into the Shuls president in Canarsie Brooklyn and gave him Hell for pocketing the proceeds of the sale and doing with it as he wished. I know Jewish center that is up for sale and I wonder whats the story and whos in charge of overseeing the sale and perspective proceeds of the sale ..don’t you?

Jewish Funeral Homes and Cemeteries Have become Strictly a Business And of Non Jewish Ownership.

1

Stock Photo of Moss Covered Gravestone Royalty FreeWhen my   grandfather died we went to a Jewish Funeral home, which name I shall omit for this segment, thou anyone who has the unfortunate task of burying a loved one will know what I write is the truth so help me G-D

  • My parents wanted an open casket ,the funeral directer , was preaching and lecturing to them quoting Jewish law saying its forbidden, my father insisted and eventually got his way , when it came to sign the contract ,my Mother noticed that the funeral directors name was Nunzio. My mother gave it to him , how dare you lecture Jewish law to me and that’s the gist of it today all the parlors are owned by private non Jewish concerns ,maybe keeping original family around as a greeter , Ala Mickey mantle and Willy Mays was at Atlantic City perhaps they own 1/10Th of the business today , who’s to say for sure, this is also the way it is in non Jewish parlors such as Catholic Protestant etc. original family no longer owns the funeral homes as in the past.
  • How did the Board of Rabbis, let this happen? where was the Board of Rabbis as these concerns were buying out each and every Jewish funeral parlor and cemetery.I say that a Jewish funeral director should be a Jewish Functionary plain and simple many Rabbis have a connection of sorts with these parlors and receive work from them such as performing a funeral services , so there’s no outcry from the Jewish Clergy . and thats the way it is folks.
